Rothenberg And Rooftop Rhinegarten
Over-the-Rhine once had four neighborhood schools. It is now down to one, and the state of education in the neighborhood is poor. Most parents have taken their children out of one sole, struggling school and placed them in failing Charters. The future of children living in Over-the-Rhine, Clifton Heights, Mt. Adams, and Downtown – as well as the health of our city and our ability to attract and retain families in the urban core from all socioeconomic backgrounds -- is dependent on the quality of education our public schools provide. If educational opportunity is dim, so is our future. The OTR Foundation is continuing a long history of advocating for the educational opportunities in OTR and Downtown. We do so by helping shape the future of community interaction with the schools. We are also working to improve the interaction between Cincinnati Public Schools and the neighborhoods it serves. The OTR Foundation maintains a “Schools And Education Committee” that meets routinely to work toward improvements in education as well as issues related to physical school buildings and assets.
We care deeply about the quality of education within Over-the-Rhine’s schools, but we have been forced to focus most of our Schools and Education attention on how CPS interacts with the physical environment. In 2008, CPS was responsible for 85% of all demolitions of historic buildings in Over-the-Rhine. In that same year, CPS also announced plans to demolish the iconic Rothenberg School and everything around it – including the home of a family who has lived in Over-the-Rhine for multiple generations. It has only been after significant struggle that we have saved Rothenberg and three historic properties around it. CPS still plans to needlessly demolish one or two other properties. Over-the-Rhine is roughly 4 demolitions away from passing 50% destruction of its historic building stock, making each and every demolition a decision that should only be made as a matter of last resort. We will continue leading the fight for preservation as long as CPS regards razing historic buildings as its preferred first step in “site preparation.”

GREEN ROOF: The Over-the-Rhine Foundation is also leading a campaign to raise funds for a rooftop teaching garden on Rothenberg. The school was originally constructed to house the playground on its roof. This makes it well-suited for a green roof, but our vision is more than passive. We want to construct a teaching garden that can be used to provide a unique, hands-on learning opportunity in subjects ranging from biology and climate to an introduction in “green design” and the job opportunities that it holds for future generations. A number of pledges and grants have been obtained for the green roof. Watch this website for details as we are prepared to announce them.
