Strengthening & Rebuilding Neighborhood Schools and the Community’s Relationship with Cincinnati Public Schools
Over-the-Rhine once had four neighborhood schools. It is now down to one, and the state of education in the neighborhood is poor. Most parents have taken their children out of closed and one sole, struggling school and placed them in failing Charters. As everywhere, the future of families living in Over-the-Rhine from all socioeconomic backgrounds is dependent on the quality of education they receive. If their educational opportunities are dim, so is our future. The OTR Foundation is continuing a long history of advocating for the educational opportunities in OTR and Downtown. We do so by engaging and interacting with parents of very divergent backgrounds and means, helping to shape the future of community interaction with the schools, and supporting adult educational opportunities as well as programs for children. We are also working to improve the interaction between Cincinnati Public Schools and the neighborhoods it serves. The OTR Foundation maintains a “Schools And Education Committee” that meets routinely to work toward improvements in education as well as issues related to physical school buildings and assets.
